Concept Testing Interview Questions and Script

A concept interview tests whether someone understands an idea, where it fits their existing work, and what remains unclear. It does not ask participants to predict whether they would buy or use a feature they have never tried.

Prepare the concept

Put one concept on a page participants can open. Use a short description, mockup, or prototype that communicates the idea without a sales pitch. Invite people who recently faced the problem the concept is meant to address.

Before showing it, ask about the participant's current workflow. Their unaided explanation after seeing the concept is more useful than agreement with your description.

Questions to ask

  1. Tell me about the last time you handled this task.
  2. What did you use, and where did the process become difficult?
  3. Please look at this concept and explain what you think it does in your own words.
  4. Where, if anywhere, would it fit the situation you just described?
  5. What would you expect to happen first?
  6. What is unclear or does not fit your current workflow?
  7. What would you need to know before trying it with real work?

Do not correct the participant's interpretation until you have recorded it. Confusion is evidence about the concept, not a cue to teach it during the test.

Ask your agent to adapt it

Adapt the concept testing script at https://usertold.ai/guides/concept-testing-interview-questions to my product.

Ask me for the decision, the concept URL, the real problem it addresses, and who recently faced that problem. Keep the current-work questions before the concept reaction. Show the complete Study JSON and wait for approval before saving or activating anything.

Review the result

Compare the intended concept with each participant's unaided interpretation. Record where it fits a recent workflow, where it conflicts, and what remains unknown. Enthusiasm is not purchase intent, and one misunderstanding is not automatically a design defect.

Use the SaaS onboarding usability test instead when participants can try a working feature. Return to all User Interview Script Templates to choose another method.
